As we enter 2025, the United States finds itself grappling with a troubling surge in violent attacks that have left communities shaken and raised urgent questions about the state of public safety. The recent incidents, including a horrific truck attack in New Orleans and an explosive incident in Las Vegas, are not isolated events but rather part of a broader pattern of violence that has become increasingly prevalent in American society. This opinion piece aims to explore the causes behind this rising violence, its implications for the new Trump administration, and how these domestic issues are shaping the global perception of the United States.

The beginning of the year has been marred by violence, with at least 16 people dead and numerous others injured in a series of attacks across the United States. The New Orleans incident on New Year’s Day stands out as particularly tragic; a man drove a truck into a crowd celebrating the holiday, killing at least 14 individuals. The attacker, identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, was an Army veteran who had previously recorded a video expressing allegiance to ISIS. This act of violence not only claimed lives but also instilled fear in a city known for its vibrant celebrations.

In Las Vegas, another shocking incident occurred when an active-duty soldier detonated an explosive device outside the Trump International Hotel, injuring several bystanders. This incident further underscores a disturbing trend: many recent acts of violence are linked to individuals with military backgrounds. 

Research indicates that military members and veterans account for approximately 28% of mass shooters in the United States. This connection raises critical questions about how military experiences may contribute to violent extremism and highlights the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support for returning veterans.

The surge in violence can be attributed to several interrelated factors that have created a perfect storm of tension and unrest within American society.

Political polarisation, a significant contributor to rising violence, has gripped the nation since Donald Trump’s first office. American politics has become more divisive than ever. The events surrounding the January 6 Capitol attack left deep scars on society, disillusioning and angering many citizens.

Trump’s rhetoric often downplays or even normalises violence among his supporters, framing events like January 6 as expressions of patriotism rather than insurrection. This narrative fosters an environment where extremist views can thrive and contribute to further violence, either in support of or in opposition to Trump’s rhetoric.

Social media’s influence on amplifying extremist ideologies cannot be ignored. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube often serve as breeding grounds for radicalisation, enabling individuals to connect with like-minded groups and disseminate harmful narratives.

The spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories contributes to an atmosphere of distrust and fear, potentially inciting violent actions among those who feel disenfranchised or threatened. Moreover, the algorithms governing these platforms often prioritize sensationalist content, further deepening societal divisions.

Economic disparities, particularly financial insecurity among Americans, significantly contribute to rising violence. The persistent effects of inflation and escalating living costs exacerbate these issues, making vulnerable populations more susceptible to radicalisation. When individuals feel economically marginalised, they may be more inclined to resort to extreme measures as a means of expressing their discontent.

As Trump prepares for his new administration, these recent violent incidents, including his close call with death, will undoubtedly shape his approach to governance. The challenge of addressing public safety concerns while navigating a politically charged environment presents formidable obstacles.

The new administration will face intense scrutiny for its response to the escalating violence. Public safety has become a top priority for many citizens, and how Trump addresses these issues will significantly influence his political standing in the future. His decision to pardon those involved in the January 6 riots indicates a possible shift towards normalising extremist behaviour within his party, which could potentially embolden further violence among his supporters.

Public sentiment regarding safety and security is likely to significantly influence voter behaviour leading up to future elections. As citizens become increasingly concerned about the rising violence, they may demand stronger measures from their leaders to address these pressing issues. If Trump fails to provide effective solutions or continues to downplay the severity of the situation, he risks alienating moderate voters who prioritise stability and security.

The new administration will encounter substantial legislative obstacles, particularly in the areas of gun control, domestic terrorism prevention, and providing mental health support to veterans. Striking a balance between these pressing demands while preserving party unity will demand meticulous manoeuvring. 

There is mounting pressure from various advocacy groups advocating for stricter gun control measures in response to the frequency of mass shootings; however, any attempt at reform may encounter formidable opposition from pro-gun lobbyists and certain segments of Trump’s base.

The recent surge in violence has profound implications for how the United States is perceived on the global stage. Historically viewed as a beacon of democracy and stability, ongoing violent incidents undermine this image and raise questions about America’s ability to maintain law and order.

Perception Abroad: As violence becomes more prevalent in American society, foreign nations may start to question their alliances with the U.S., especially if they perceive that domestic instability could affect international relations or security commitments. Countries that rely on American leadership may reconsider their positions if they believe that internal chaos undermines U.S. credibility on global issues.

Influence on Foreign Policy: As domestic issues escalate, there is concern that U.S. foreign policy may become increasingly insular, prioritising internal stability over international engagement. This shift could impact alliances and partnerships that rely on American leadership in global security matters. For instance, countries facing their own challenges with extremism may find it more difficult to combat radical ideologies when they witness such behaviours being normalised or excused within American politics.

Effects on Other Countries: The rise in violence within the U.S. may also embolden extremist groups worldwide as they draw inspiration from domestic events. When prominent figures like Trump use inflammatory rhetoric without repercussions, it can signal to extremists elsewhere that similar tactics might be effective in their own contexts.

The recent surge in violent attacks across the United States serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing society today. As we navigate this tumultuous landscape, it is crucial for leaders—both political and community-based—to work collaboratively towards solutions that prioritise safety while addressing the underlying causes of violence.

Understanding how these events impact both domestic politics under Trump’s new administration and international relations will be vital moving forward. By fostering open dialogue and promoting community engagement, we can strive towards a future where violence is no longer seen as an acceptable means of expressing discontent.
